20 New Features of Bing – Microsoft’s New Search Engine

Bing – Microsoft’s new search engine will launch on June 3, 2009.  The engine will replace Live Search as the default Microsoft search engine.  Live Search has struggled to maintain search share among the major search engines.  Bing is Microsoft’s answer for a need to rebrand Live Search and to add new competitive features.  I’m really looking forward to seeing if this engine can hold up against Google and Yahoo.

Here are 20 new features of Bing compiled from the Bing Product Guide:

  1. Autosuggest - Search suggestions as user types query
  2. Quick view preview feature  Displays preview of page when mouse pointer hovers over result.
  3. Best Match – Bing determines what the best match is for your search query and features it at the top.  The rest of the results are hidden so the focus is on the best match.  Bing does this when it is very confident about what you are looking for.  For example, the search for “UPS” features UPS.com and even has a box to enter a tracking code.
  4. Instant Answers - One-click access to the information listed in the search results.  For example, you can enter a flight number and Bing will return the estimated arrival time.  You can also type in “traffic” and see what the traffic is like based your geographic location.
